Many photos and details below
This General Electric (GE) portable was first sold in 1965 with a picture tube that only displayed a black and white image. GE sold this style of cabinet, and variations of it, all the way into the early 1980s. This 1965 set lived a full life before being up-cycled, and its exterior retains some minor signs of wear in places, even after repairs and painting.
Much work was done on this little set to get it where it is now. For example, the interior was modified to make more room and to make it safe (no sharp points or edges), the handle's large crack was repaired, and the clear plastic was treated for weeks with high concentration hydrogen peroxide in order to remove as much of the yellowing from age as possible.

This General Electric portable, model #M150CWH, first came to market in 1965 with an image that was only black and white. At that time there were two "bands" (ranges) of frequencies that were broadcast over the air. The first available frequencies (channels) were called Very High Frequency, or VHF for short. More channels were made possible by using another band of frequencies called Ultra High Frequency, or UHF for short.
The first commercially licensed UHF station on the air was KPTV in Portland, Oregon, which began broadcasting on September 18, 1952. Many early UHF stations struggled because most televisions at the time did not have built-in UHF tuners. The All-Channel Receiver Act of 1962 mandated that all new television sets must be able to receive both UHF and VHF channels.
Color TV started with the first public broadcast on June 25, 1951, but it did not become widespread until the 1970s. Few people could watch in color because few households had color sets, very likely because color TVs were very expensive. Mass production of color TVs began around 1953, but color TV didn't become the standard until the early 1970s, when falling prices and more color programming encouraged consumers to switch. By 1972, color TV sets began to outsell black and white models.
